A Superbly Designed Pied a Terre Apartment.
Pied a Terre Apartment in the Heart of Dublin
A sensitively & beautifully designed apartment in a historic, restored & modernised 19th century Barracks. Our response to our client’s brief was to design for comfort, ease and calm, styled on the Georgian military theme to match the age of their listed 19th-century building and its surroundings. We would want any military officer from the late Georgian era to really enjoy the comforts laid on in this apartment today and to perhaps stand in awe and with a little envy at the incredible luxury and comfort a Barracks can now afford its residents almost two centuries later.
The original 12-foot high ceilings, tall sash windows, and real fireplace, to the Georgian front of the property, nudged us towards the simple Georgian club-style theme that our client adored, from concept to fruition.
Design Details
The compact kitchen is positioned at the heart of the apartment. The kitchen is small but perfectly formed. It’s bright with a blue green countertop and cabinetry and a matching baked colour glass splashback. It’s modern but not clinical thanks to the unusual wood effect floor tiles that are an exact match to the thick and wide oak floor planks laid out throughout the apartment. Farrow and Ball Clunch walls keep the kitchen fresh and is a universal colour used for all walls throughout. The common floor and wall covering to all rooms unites the apartment and gives it a bigger expansive feel.
The drawing/dining room is served by a generous hatch from the kitchen allowing anyone preparing and cooking food the option to stay close to the conversation at the table. The dining table is a handmade oak hunting style table that folds out to seat 6 and folds away to serving side table size. The dining chairs are antique 19th century arts and craft. The club style leather sofas in deep brown are generous and comfortable with overhanging occasional tables for holding a drink or a laptop. Crystal lamp bases and their crisp silver white linen shades give beautiful alternative side lighting to the central ceiling antique beaded crystal chandelier.

The light reflects beautifully in the large gilt framed over mantel mirror above the original fireplace. The roman blinds are of a rich velvet stripe in military red, gold and green, picking up on the gilt mirror frame and matched with cushions on the leather sofas and a patterned Persian rug on the floor. Joinery cleverly houses books and a TV on an armed bracket that can be folded away. A regency desk tucked away to one side of the fireplace under a tall window for natural light covers the all-important option on working from home.
The hallway cupboards are system organised for housing a washer dryer, paper and glass recycling units, ironing board and iron, hoover and cleaning products. Mirrored door paneling creates a feeling of space.
Solid oak handmade and oversized beds work to create luxury bedrooms and match the oak paneled flooring. The wardrobe doors were replaced with customisable off-the-peg acrylic doors in French grey to create wardrobes with individual style.
The art we curated for the apartment is local and contemporary or vintage and antique and acted as a source of colours chosen for fabrics, trim, rugs, kitchen cabinetry and baked colour glass splashbacks.
Design Principles & Expertise
Listed Property Design
We are interior designers who have deep experience in understanding period styles and historical detail allowing us to design the interior of historic places without compromising their architectural importance and value
Tasteful Classic Comfort
We firmly believe that a space should be as comfortable as it is beautiful, which is why at the start of every project we think about how the space is going to be used. We work together with our clients to create personal, welcoming and comfortable interiors that endure beyond the current trend
Scale and Proportion
Our design for this apartment needed to cater for a 19th century proportion to the front and a modern 21st century built extension proportion to the back. Our design needed to be deeply conscious of this variation with the capacity to unify the entire design as one
